A task title names the topic: "Pricing page." A task brief says what finished looks like: the result, who it is for, what it must include, what to avoid, and when. Titles are fine for your own to-do list. When someone else does the work, a title alone is a guess waiting to happen.
Why most tasks are just titles
Task tools make the title the only required field. So most tasks look like this:
- "Pricing page"
- "Q3 deck"
- "Fix onboarding"
- "Client email"
To the person who wrote them, they are clear. They know the whole story. To anyone else, each one could mean five different jobs.
Five titles, rewritten as briefs
| Title | Brief |
|---|---|
| Pricing page | Rewrite the pricing page copy for small agencies. Must include the three plans and a FAQ. No discounts. Draft Wed. |
| Q3 deck | 10-slide board deck: revenue vs plan, three risks, hiring ask. Board reads it the night before. Final Thu. |
| Fix onboarding | Find the top three steps where new customers stall, with numbers. A one-page summary for the CS team by Friday. |
| Client email | Email to Northwind confirming the new launch date (June 17) and why. Friendly, under 120 words. Send today. |
| Update the FAQ | Add answers to the five most common setup tickets from last month. Plain words, grade 7. By Tue. |
What a brief adds
- The result. What exists when it is done.
- The reader. Who it is for changes everything.
- Must-haves. What it cannot leave out.
- Must-nots. What would make it wrong.
- The date. And sometimes a first-look date.
Do you always need a brief?
No. If you are doing the task yourself, a title is fine. If the task is tiny and routine, a title is fine. Add a brief when:
- Someone else will do it.
- It will be reviewed by someone else.
- It has gone wrong before.

Questions people ask
Should the brief go in the title?
