A useful brief answers five questions: what result, for whom, what it must include, what it must not do, and when. You can type those as five lines, or say them out loud in under a minute. Either way, two minutes of briefing saves hours of rework.
Why people skip briefs
They feel slow. Writing a perfect brief feels like more work than doing the task. So people send a title, "Q3 deck," and hope.
The fix is not a longer brief. It is a faster one.
The five questions
- What is the result? Not the topic. The thing that exists when it is done.
- Who is it for? The reader, and what they care about.
- What must it include? Two to four must-haves.
- What must it not do? Anything off-limits.
- When is it due? And when you want a first look.
Option 1: the five-line template
Result:For:Must include:Must not:Due:
Example:
Result: 10-slide deck for the Q3 board meetingFor: board members, who read it the night beforeMust include: revenue vs plan, the three risks, the hiring askMust not: share customer namesDue: draft Tuesday noon, final Thursday
Option 2: say it out loud
Talking is faster than typing for most people. Use the five questions as prompts and just talk:
"So this is the deck for the Q3 board meeting, about ten slides. It's for the board, they read it the night before, so it has to make sense without me presenting. It needs revenue against plan, our three biggest risks, and the ask for two new hires. Don't put customer names in it. Draft by Tuesday lunchtime, final Thursday."
That is 25 seconds. It covers all five.
Option 3: both
Say it out loud, then tidy it into the five lines. Most people find this the fastest way to a clear brief. The task brief builder gives you the five boxes to fill.
The one line people forget
"Who is it for" gets skipped most. It is also the line that changes the work most. A report for your manager and the same report for a client are different reports.

Questions people ask
Is two minutes really enough?
For most everyday tasks, yes. Big projects need a project brief.
What if I do not know all five answers?
Say so in the brief: "Not sure about the length; suggest one." That is still clearer than silence.
Work you can trust, without redoing it.
Your team gets feedback before work reaches you, or your client.
