Client work  ·  2 min read

A client report causes questions when the client cannot quickly tell how things are going, what changed, and what happens next. Lead with one status line. Explain any number that moved. Answer the questions you know they will ask. Keep it to one page, in their words, not yours.

A status report in the order the reader needs: at risk, I need, done, nextAT RISKFAQ page, 3 days behind. If screenshots arrive by Tuesday we hold June3; if not, slips a week.I NEEDOne message from you to product, by Monday.DONECustomer email approved · handout sent · help article updatedNEXTSend email Friday · start FAQ · train supportA busy reader getsthis far.So the two things theymust act on go first.Done and next are proof, not news.
The first line should answer "are we OK?"

The questions every client has

  1. Are we on track?
  2. What did we get for our money this month?
  3. Is anything wrong?
  4. What do you need from us?
  5. What happens next?

A report that answers these five in order gets fewer replies.

Five habits

1. Status first. One line. On track, at risk or off track.

2. Results before activity. "312 sign-ups" matters more than "sent 3 emails."

3. Explain every big change. If a number moved, say why, before they ask.

4. Bad news early and plain. With the plan to fix it.

5. Their words. "Sign-ups," not "MQLs." "Visits," not "sessions."

Check before you send

Check every number against the source. Click every link. Read the first line as if you were the client's CEO. The guide on how to check a client report before sending has the full list.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Should I include hours?

Only if the client pays by the hour or asks. Otherwise show results.

What if the month went badly?

Say so in the first line, with the cause and the fix. Clients forgive problems. They do not forgive surprises.
