Feedback on work template: examples for reports, designs, code and emails
A feedback template for finished work: what works, what to change and why, and what happens next. Includes filled examples for a report, a design, code and a customer email.
Keep what works. Change what matters, with the reason. Say what happens next. Four filled examples below.
The template
Feedback · [deliverable] · [date]WORKS WELL (keep it)- [Specific thing, and why it works]CHANGE (most important first)1. [What, exactly] → [why it matters] → [what to do]2. ...NEXT[Send it after these / one more look / approved]
Example: a client report
WORKS WELL- The summary line says "on track" first. The client reads that line.CHANGE1. The chart shows hours, but the client asked about results → swap it for the sign-ups chart.2. Two numbers do not match the source sheet (rows 14 and 22) → fix them.NEXTSend it after these. No need for another look.
Example: a design
WORKS WELL- The headline size and the white space. Keep both.CHANGE1. The button is light gray → people may miss it → use the brand blue.2. The date has no time zone → readers in California will be confused → add "Eastern."NEXTSend the final files after these.
Example: code
WORKS WELL- Clear function names. Tests for the happy path.CHANGE1. No test for an empty invoice list → this crashed last month → add one.2. The query runs inside the loop → slow with 1,000 invoices → move it out.NEXTPing me when pushed. I'll approve.
Example: a customer email
WORKS WELL- Friendly tone, short paragraphs.CHANGE1. The start date is in the last line → many will not read that far → put it in the first two lines.2. "Authenticate" → plainer word works better → "confirm it's you."NEXTSend it.
Tips
- Lead with the most important change.
- One reason per change. The reader, the goal, the brief or a rule.
- Say what to keep. It stops good parts being rewritten.
- End the loop. "Send it after these" saves a round.

Questions people ask
Should I use the "feedback sandwich"?
Not as a cushion. Say what works because it is useful, not to soften the change.
Written or spoken?
Written for anything with more than one change. People can come back to it.
Work you can trust, without redoing it.
Your team gets feedback before work reaches you, or your client.
