Yes, and it is the recruiter's nightmare. Every trick you have ever used is now used on you. The polished resume. "Consistently exceeded quota." The confident interview. The references who are suspiciously available. The way through is the same one you use on clients' orders: write down what a good recruiter actually does, ask for evidence, and use a work sample. The best screen for a recruiter is to hand them a job order and a submittal and ask what is missing.

Recruiting recruiters, the experience

The candidate's resume says "top biller, 150 percent of target." The interview is excellent; they have run a thousand of them from the other side. They ask smart questions about your comp plan. Their references are two friends and a former manager who left the industry. You hire them. Three months later, their submittals bounce and their candidates do not show up, and you realize they were great at the thing you measured, which was the interview.

2Staffing and recruiting

Write down what a good recruiter does

Not "self-starter" or "hunter mentality." The things that show up in the work.

  • Takes orders in writing, with must-haves, pay and who decides.
  • Writes submittals that answer the order in the first three lines with proof.
  • Confirms starts with the four lines, the night before.
  • Closes the loop with every candidate.
  • Their placements stick.

That list is the job. Screen for it.

3Staffing and recruiting

Ask for evidence, not stories

"Tell me about your biggest placement" gets a story. Ask instead:

  • "What was your first-submittal acceptance rate, roughly?" Good recruiters know. Others say "high."
  • "How many of your placements from last year are still there?" Same.
  • "Walk me through the last order you took, line by line." Listen for pay, shift, must-haves and a decision-maker.

The work sample

Hand them a real job order and a submittal written against it, with one must-have missing and one claim unproven. Ask: "Would you send this? What would you change?" A strong recruiter spots both in a minute and says what to add. A weak one says "looks good" or rewrites the adjectives.

Then ask them to write the confirmation note for Monday's start. Count the lines. Four is the standard.

What good recruiters want from you

They are screening you too. The ones you want ask about three things: how orders are taken, how fast they get feedback on their submittals, and whether they will be measured on calls or on placements. Have good answers. "Every submittal is checked against the order before it goes, you'll hear within the hour, and we measure first submittals accepted" is the answer that wins the top biller.

How M-Tracker helps

Where M-Tracker fits

The work sample is a one-time version of what M-Tracker does every day: reading a submittal against the order and naming what is missing. A new recruiter joining a firm that uses it gets feedback on every submittal from week one, and the manager sees whether the hire reads orders the way the interview said they did.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Should I hire recruiters from outside the industry?

Often, yes. Listening, writing and follow-through transfer. Train them on reading orders with the first twenty submittals.

How do I check a recruiter's references properly?

Call through the firm's main number and ask for the manager by name. Ask about bounce-backs and no-shows, not about personality.

What is the biggest red flag in a recruiter candidate?

Vagueness about their own numbers. Recruiters who were good know their ratios.
