Rework and work quality  ·  2 min read

Quality control is checking work against a standard before it goes out, so problems are caught by you instead of by the customer. The standard says what good looks like. The check compares the work with it. If the work passes, it ships. If not, it gets fixed first. That is the whole idea, in a factory or in an office.

1Rework and work quality

The three parts

A standard. What the finished work must be. For a part, a measurement. For a report, the brief: these numbers, this length, this audience.

A check. Someone or something compares the work with the standard. A gauge, a checklist, a review.

A decision. Pass, and it goes out. Fail, and it goes back with a note on what to fix.

What quality control is not

It is not the same as quality assurance, which is about designing the process so defects are rare in the first place. It is not inspection for its own sake. And it is not the customer finding the problem; by then it is a complaint, not control.

3Rework and work quality

Quality control in an office

Most office teams have no quality control at all. Work goes from the person to the client, and the client does the checking. The fix is simple: write the standard before the work, as a brief with done checks, and compare the finished work with it before it leaves.

How M-Tracker helps

Where M-Tracker fits

M-Tracker is quality control for knowledge work. Each task has a brief, which is the standard. When the work is sent, M-Tracker compares it with the brief and writes a plain review: what works, what is missing, what to change. The person sees it first and fixes it, so the check happens before the work reaches the manager or the client. Problems get caught by the team, not the customer.

Ideally the person who did the work, against a written standard, then a second look for anything client-facing.

How long should it take?

A few minutes per piece. Far less than the rework it prevents.
