The real cons are these. Temp pay can be lower than direct-hire pay for the same work. Benefits are often thinner. An assignment can end with little notice. You can feel like an outsider at the client site. And some agencies go quiet on you between assignments. These are fair objections. A good agency cannot remove all of them, but it does four things differently, and candidates should ask about each one before signing up.
The cons, honestly
Pay. The client pays the agency a bill rate, and the agency pays you less than that. The difference covers taxes, insurance and the agency's margin. For some roles, a direct hire would be paid more. For others, especially where the agency has a volume deal, the pay is the same or better. Ask for the number and compare.
Benefits. Many agencies offer health coverage and paid time off, but often after a waiting period and often thinner than a large employer's. Ask what you get, and when.
Security. A temp assignment can end when the client's order ends. Good agencies tell you the expected length up front and work on the next one before this one finishes.
Feeling like an outsider. Different badge, different rules, sometimes different break room. This is real and mostly down to the client site.
Silence between assignments. The worst agencies place you, collect the margin, and forget you until they need you.
What a good agency does differently
- Tells you the pay, in writing, before you say yes. The number, the pay day, and whether overtime is expected.
- Tells you how long the order is. And calls you two weeks before it ends about the next one.
- Confirms the details the night before day one. Start time, gate, what to bring, who to ask for. So your first day is not a surprise.
- Calls you back. Including when the answer is no.
If an agency does those four things, most of the cons shrink. If it does not, the cons are the whole experience.
The myth to clear up
Legitimate staffing agencies do not take a cut of your pay. The client pays the agency. Your pay rate is your pay rate. In many states, charging job seekers a fee to be placed is restricted or banned. If an agency asks you for money, walk away.
Where M-Tracker fits
Two of the four things above are pieces of writing: the offer note and the night-before confirmation. M-Tracker checks each one against a standard before it goes out, the number, the start, the length and what happens next, and tells the recruiter in plain words when a line is missing. Workers placed by a firm that does this get fewer surprises on day one.

Questions people ask
Can a temp job turn into a permanent one?
Often. Many orders are temp-to-hire. Ask the agency at the start whether this one is.
Can I work with more than one agency?
Yes, unless you signed something that says otherwise. Tell each one so nobody double-books you.
Should I take a temp role while looking for a direct one?
Usually yes. Recent work on the resume, a reference, and a foot in the door at a client beat a gap.
Work you can trust, without redoing it.
Your team gets feedback before work reaches you, or your client.
