Staffing and recruiting  ·  4 min read

Recruiting is one of the easier professional jobs to get into without a specific degree, and one of the harder ones to get good at. Most people start as a coordinator, a sourcer, or a trainee at a staffing agency. The first skill to master is not sourcing or Boolean search. It is reading a job order properly, because every other skill depends on knowing exactly what you are looking for. Learn that in week one and you are ahead of recruiters with a year on the desk.

How a new recruiter learns: see the standard, write one, get it reviewed in minutes, fix it, send it, repeat twenty times1Show the standardOne good submittal, marked up.2They write oneAgainst a real order.3Review in minutesWhat matches, what is missing.4Fix, then sendBefore the client sees it.Repeat for the first twenty submittals. The training is not a slide deck. It is twenty real submittals with feedback the same hour.
Your first twenty submittals are the training. Make each one count.

Ways in

  • Recruiting coordinator. Scheduling, confirmations, paperwork. You see every order and every submittal. The best seat to learn from.
  • Sourcer. Finding candidates for recruiters to screen. Teaches the search, not the judgment.
  • Agency trainee. Many staffing firms hire people with no experience and train them on a desk. Pay is a base plus commission. The learning is fast and so is the turnover.
  • From a related job. Sales, customer service, HR admin. The skills carry: listening, writing, follow-through.

The first skill: reading a job order

A job order is a short list of what the client needs. Most new recruiters read the title and start searching. A recruiter who reads the order properly reads every line as a requirement. "Current card" means current, with a date. "Nights" means the candidate has agreed to nights. "Start Monday" means Monday.

Then they ask what is missing. Who decides? What is the pay? What would make this hire a mistake? A recruiter who can take a vague request and turn it into five written lines is useful on day one.

Week one, if you want to learn fast

  1. Read ten job orders and the submittals that filled them, side by side. Notice how a good submittal answers the order line by line.
  2. Write one order yourself from a recording or notes of an intake call. Have someone check it.
  3. Write your first submittal against a real order. Get it reviewed the same day. Fix it. Send it.
  4. Repeat for twenty submittals. Ask for feedback on every one.

Twenty submittals with same-day feedback teach more than a month of shadowing.

How to show it in an interview

Ask to see a job order from the firm and talk through it. "I'd want to confirm the shift and the card date before sourcing, and I'd ask who decides." A hiring manager hears that and knows you will not waste the desk's hours. Bring a short writing sample too: a made-up submittal, three lines answering three must-haves.

What the job is actually like

Phones, rejection, clients who go quiet, candidates who ghost. It is stressful and it is learnable. The recruiters who last are not the loudest. They are the ones whose submittals get accepted and whose candidates show up, because they read the order.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Do I need a degree?

No. Some corporate recruiting roles ask for one. Most agency roles care about whether you can listen, write and follow through.

Agency or corporate first?

Agency teaches faster and pays on results. Corporate is steadier. Many good corporate recruiters started on an agency desk.

How long until I am any good?

Useful in three months, strong in a year, if you get feedback on every submittal.
