Remote and hybrid teams  ·  2 min read

Monitor the work, not the person. For each task, know what it should produce, when the finished work was sent, whether it met the brief, and how long it took. Review those four things weekly. Screen monitoring and activity tracking tell you someone was at a computer. They do not tell you anything was done, and they cost you the people you most want to keep.

Two categories: employee monitoring software and work review softwareEMPLOYEE MONITORING SOFTWAREInstalls on the computer. Records time, activity levels, apps and sites, idleperiods, optional screenshots.Answers: was this person active?WORK REVIEW SOFTWAREWorks from the task. Holds the brief, readsthe finished work against it, says whatmatches and what is missing.Answers: was the work done, and was it right? Most teams need the second one and buy the first one, because it is more familiar.
Monitoring asks whether someone was there. Work review asks whether the work was good.
1Remote and hybrid teams

Two kinds of monitoring

Monitoring the person. Screenshots, keystroke counts, active time, webcam checks. It answers "were they at the desk." It does not answer "was the work right." People game it with mouse movers and resent it.

Monitoring the work. Briefs, finished work, reviews, hours by task. It answers the question you actually have. Nobody games it, because the only way to look good is to do good work.

2Remote and hybrid teams

The weekly work review

Thirty minutes, same time each week. Open the list of work sent. For each piece: accepted or returned, and the hours. Look for patterns. Three pieces returned for the same reason means the brief is the problem. One person at double the hours means something is in the way.

What the law says

Rules differ by country and state. Many places allow monitoring of company devices with notice. Some require consent. Everywhere, the trust cost is the same. Check your local rules before installing anything, and ask whether you need it at all.

How M-Tracker helps

Where M-Tracker fits

M-Tracker monitors the work and nothing else. Each task has a brief. When the work is sent, M-Tracker compares it with the brief and writes a plain review the person sees first. The timer records hours by task and project, entered by the person. There are no screenshots, no keystroke logging and no activity monitoring. A manager sees output, quality and cost for the week from anywhere.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is it legal to monitor remote employees?

Often yes for company devices with notice, but rules differ by place. Check before you act.

What if I suspect someone is not working?

Look at their finished work for two weeks. Either it is there or it is not. That is the only evidence that holds up.

Do employees mind work review?

Most prefer it. It replaces vague suspicion with a clear record of what they did.
