Staffing and recruiting  ·  4 min read

For many nurses, yes, with eyes open. Travel pay came down a long way from its 2021 and 2022 peak, and contracts are more competitive now. But a traveler with an in-demand specialty, a real tax home and some flexibility on location still usually earns more than staff pay for the same work, and gets to choose where and when. For agencies, the question is different: what keeps good travelers coming back to the same recruiter, now that the easy money is gone?

1Staffing and recruiting

For travelers: what changed

In 2021 and 2022, some contracts paid two or three times staff rates. Facilities were desperate. That ended. Rates fell through 2023 and 2024 and have settled at a level that is higher than staff pay in most specialties, but not dramatically so once housing and the tax-home rules are counted honestly.

What did not change: 13-week contracts, the chance to live somewhere new, and the ability to take time off between contracts without asking anyone.

2Staffing and recruiting

For travelers: when it is worth it

  • You have one to two years in a specialty facilities want: ICU, ER, labor and delivery, OR, and a few others.
  • You keep a real tax home, so stipends stay tax-free, and you understand the 12-month rule.
  • You can be flexible on location. The best-paid contracts are often not in the most popular cities.
  • You like change more than you like a permanent locker.
3Staffing and recruiting

For travelers: when it is not

  • Your specialty is one where staff and travel pay are close.
  • You would have to give up your home and live contract to contract, which changes the tax picture.
  • You need the stability of one unit, one manager and a predictable schedule.

For agencies: what keeps travelers coming back

When rates were high, travelers tolerated bad recruiters. Now they choose. The recruiter they come back to does four things.

  1. Gives straight numbers. The pay package broken down in writing: taxable base, stipends, what is guaranteed and what is not.
  2. Gets the details right before day one. Start date, unit, shift, housing, who to report to. The four-line confirmation note, sent and read out loud.
  3. Handles credentials early. Every date read against the end of the contract, not the start. No calls from the facility about an expired card.
  4. Calls back. Including when there is no contract this month.

None of those cost money. All of them are the difference between a traveler who takes the next contract with you and one who takes it with the agency that answered the phone.

How M-Tracker helps

Where M-Tracker fits

Two of those four are pieces of writing with a standard: the offer note and the confirmation. M-Tracker checks each one against the standard before it goes out and tells the recruiter in plain words when a line is missing. The traveler's file is read against the facility's list the same way. Travelers come back to recruiters whose details are right, and this is how the details get right.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Which specialties still pay best?

Generally the ones facilities struggle to staff: critical care, emergency, OR and labor and delivery. It changes by region and season.

Is it worth it without a tax home?

Run the numbers with a tax professional. Fully taxed travel pay can still beat staff pay, but by less than it looks.

Will rates go back up?

Nobody knows. Plan on today's rates and treat anything above them as a bonus.
