Async update template: a written update that replaces a status meeting
An async update template for remote and hybrid teams: done, next, blocked and one decision needed. Two minutes to write, thirty seconds to read. With examples for daily and weekly.
Four short lines: done, next, blocked, and anything you need decided. Post it at the same time every day or week. Skip the meeting.
When to use it
For daily or weekly updates in a remote or hybrid team, especially across time zones. Post it in your team channel or project at a fixed time.
The template
[Name] · [date]BLOCKED: [what, and who can unblock it] (or "nothing")NEED: [a decision or input, from whom, by when] (or "nothing")DONE: [finished and checked work, with links]NEXT: [what I will finish before the next update]
Daily example
Priya · Tue June 3BLOCKED: nothingNEED: Dana, pick headline A or B for the webinar page by 3 PMDONE: webinar landing page draft (link) · 3 social posts scheduledNEXT: final page design · email header

Rules that make it work
- Same time, every time. Readers learn when to look.
- Blocked and need come first. Most readers stop after two lines.
- Link the work. "Done" with a link is proof. Without one, it is a claim.
- Reply in a thread. Keep the channel readable.
When you still need a meeting
Async updates replace status meetings, not every meeting. Meet when you need to decide something hard, solve a problem together, or when someone needs support. Try one async week and see which meetings you still miss.
Where M-Tracker fits
M-Tracker shows what each person finished, what is waiting for review and what came back for changes, from the work itself. Much of the update is already there, and links point to real work that has been checked. No screenshots and no activity tracking.

Questions people ask
Daily or weekly?
Daily for fast-moving teams of up to 8. Weekly for most others.
What if nobody reads them?
Keep them to four lines, and have the manager reply to every "need" the same day. People read what gets answers.
Work you can trust, without redoing it.
Your team gets feedback before work reaches you, or your client.
