Why payroll wants decimals
A clock counts in 60s. Money counts in 100s. So a payroll system cannot multiply 7 hours 45 minutes by a pay rate. It needs 7.75.
The rule is simple. Keep the hours. Divide the minutes by 60.
- 7:15 is 7 + 15 ÷ 60 = 7.25
- 7:20 is 7 + 20 ÷ 60 = 7.33
- 7:45 is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75
The mistake that costs money
People often write 7 hours 30 minutes as 7.30. That is wrong. 7.30 is 7 hours and 18 minutes. Over a year, that small slip adds up for every person on the team.
Going back is just as easy. Take the part after the dot and multiply by 60. 0.4 hours is 24 minutes, so 8.4 is 8:24.
