They ask what done looks like before they start. They say yes out loud, or say no. They show their work without being asked. They flag problems early. They own mistakes in one sentence. They fix the cause, not just the symptom. They meet dates or move them before, not after. They give credit. They take feedback as information. And they do what they said when nobody is checking.
The ten, and what each looks like
- Asks what done means. "What would make this a yes for you?" before opening a document.
- Says yes or no out loud. Silence is not agreement. Neither is "I'll try."
- Shows the work. A short line on progress before anyone asks, and the finished piece when it is ready.
- Flags early. "This will be late" on Tuesday, not on Friday.
- Owns mistakes in a sentence. "That was mine." Then the fix.
- Fixes the cause. Adds the check that stops the mistake repeating.
- Moves dates before, not after. A date changed in advance is a plan. Changed after is an excuse.
- Gives credit. Names who helped. Accountable people are not worried about looking small.
- Takes feedback as information. Not as an attack. Asks what to change, then changes it.
- Keeps promises unobserved. The real test. Does the work the same when nobody is checking.
The one quality under the ten
They treat their word as a thing other people can plan around. Everything on the list follows from that.
For managers
You can grow these qualities or kill them. Clear briefs make quality one easy. Calm responses to early flags make four and five safe. Reviewing the work, not the person, makes nine possible.
Where M-Tracker fits
Qualities one, three and nine are built into how M-Tracker works. Each task has a brief that says what done looks like. When the work is sent, M-Tracker checks it against the brief and writes a plain review the person sees first, so they get the feedback as information, privately, before anyone else sees the work. The record of briefs, work and reviews is the "showing" done for them.

Questions people ask
Can accountability be taught?
The behaviors can. Start with quality one; the others follow.
Is an accountable person the same as a reliable one?
Reliable people deliver. Accountable people also own it when they do not.
How do I hire for it?
Ask about a mistake they made and what changed after. Listen for "I," not "they."
Work you can trust, without redoing it.
Your team gets feedback before work reaches you, or your client.
