Staffing and recruiting  ·  4 min read

On a recruiting desk, it shows in the submittals first. The order is met to the letter and nothing more. The must-haves are there; the line that answers what the client really worried about is not. Candidates get the two-line update, never a call. Orders that need an extra question get sourced from the title. The work is not wrong. It has just stopped being good. The cause is usually one of three things, and none of them are fixed by watching the person more closely.

Quiet quitting is invisible on an activity report and obvious in the work.
1Staffing and recruiting

What it looks like in the work

  • Submittals that answer the must-haves and nothing else. No line about the thing the client said hurt last time.
  • Intake calls that stop at the job title. No "what would make this hire a mistake?"
  • Confirmations sent, Sunday calls skipped.
  • Updates that are technically on time and say nothing.
  • No referrals asked for, ever.
  • First-submittal acceptance drifting down over a quarter, while call volume stays the same.

Activity reports miss all of it. The person is present and busy. The judgment has gone.

2Staffing and recruiting

The three usual causes

1. The feedback stopped. Nobody has said anything about their work in months except when something went wrong. Doing more got the same response as doing enough, so they do enough.

2. The load is wrong. Forty open orders. The extra question on each intake is the first thing to go when there is no time for it.

3. The process fights them. Every submittal waits a day for a look. Every good idea becomes a sign-off. They stopped bringing the extra because it slowed things down.

Sometimes it is a fourth: they are leaving and have not said so. The first three are more common and more fixable.

3Staffing and recruiting

What to do, that is not surveillance

Look at the work together. Pick three recent submittals and the orders they answered. "This one meets the order. What would have made it the one the client hired from?" Not a lecture. A conversation about the gap between enough and good.

Fix the load. If it is forty orders, it is forty orders. Lower it and watch whether the extra question comes back.

Restart the feedback. Same-day notes on submittals, including the good ones. "The line about the cold-storage lead was exactly what the client needed." People bring the extra when someone notices it.

Ask directly, once. "Something's changed in the work. What's going on?" Then listen.

What not to do

Do not install monitoring. A quiet quitter under surveillance becomes a mouse wiggler, and you lose the chance to find out what happened. Do not threaten. Do not compare them with the top biller in front of the desk. All three confirm the thing they already suspect: nobody is paying attention to the work, only to the numbers.

How M-Tracker helps

Where M-Tracker fits

M-Tracker makes the work visible without watching the person. Each submittal is read against the written order before the client sees it, so a manager can see when the must-haves are met and the extra has gone, and can give same-day feedback on the good ones as well as the gaps. No screenshots, no activity scores. The conversation starts with the work, which is where quiet quitting shows first.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is quiet quitting just doing your job?

Doing exactly the job and no more is allowed. On a recruiting desk it shows up as placements that are fine instead of placements that stick, and clients notice the difference.

Should I put them on a plan?

Not before you have looked at the load and restarted the feedback. Most quiet quitting is a response to something the desk did first.

What if they really are leaving?

Then a good conversation gets you a proper notice period and maybe a referral. A surveillance tool gets you neither.
