Accountability  ·  2 min read

Personal, team and organizational. Personal: I own what I said I would do and what I delivered. Team: we own each other's results and say so when someone is slipping. Organizational: leaders own the systems, the briefs, the reviews and the consequences, that make the first two possible. Most companies ask for level one, hope for level two and never build level three.

Accountability as a loop: agree what done means, do it, show it, review it, fix or acceptAccountability as a loopAgree what donemeansDo the workShow it: fileor linkReview againstthe briefFix, or acceptA loop everyone can see beats a word everyone defines differently.
The same loop at every level. Only the "we" changes.
1Accountability

Level one: personal

I know what done looks like, I said yes, I show my work, I own my mistakes and fix the cause. This is the level most training aims at, and it is the easiest to see in a week of work.

2Accountability

Level two: team

The team owns the result together. That means a teammate can say "that doesn't meet the brief" without it being an attack, and "I'm behind, can you take this piece" without it being a confession. Level two needs shared briefs, so everyone can see what each piece is supposed to be.

3Accountability

Level three: organizational

Leaders own the system. Are expectations written before the work? Are finished pieces reviewed against them? Are consequences the same for everyone, including managers? If level three is missing, level one looks like heroics and level two never forms.

4Accountability

Why the levels stack

A person can be accountable alone. A team can be accountable only if its members can see each other's work. An organization is accountable only if its leaders build the tools and habits that make seeing the work normal. Each level depends on the one above it more than people admit.

How M-Tracker helps

Where M-Tracker fits

M-Tracker supplies the level-three system that makes the other two work. Every task has a brief the team can see. When the work is sent, it is checked against the brief and the person sees the review first. Finished and accepted work is visible to the team. Leaders get a record of briefs, reviews and hours without building a process by hand. Personal, team and organizational, on one shared view of the work.

Three. Write briefs and review work. Levels one and two follow quickly.

For a while, by holding each other to shared briefs. It does not last without level three.

Is organizational accountability the same as compliance?

No. Compliance is following rules. Accountability is owning results.
