What the scores mean

Reading grade level is the US school grade that could read the text easily. Grade 8 means a 13-year-old could follow it. Most adults are most comfortable at grade 7 to 9, even if they can read harder text.

Flesch reading ease runs from 0 to 100. Higher is easier.

Reading easeWhat it means
80 and upVery easy. Most people read it quickly.
60 to 79Easy. Plain English.
30 to 59Fairly hard. Fine for experts, slow for everyone else.
Under 30Hard. Many readers will skim or give up.

Both scores look at two things: how long your sentences are, and how many syllables your words have.

Three fixes that work

  • Split long sentences. One idea per sentence. Aim for an average under 15 words.
  • Swap long words. "Use" not "utilize." "Start" not "commence." "Help" not "facilitate."
  • Lead with the point. Readers decide in the first line if they will keep reading.

A score is a guide, not a goal. Short words in the wrong order are still unclear. Read it out loud too.
