The sprint capacity formula

For each person:

(working days − days off) × focus hours a day × share on the sprint − their share of sprint meetings

Example: a 10-day sprint, 6 focus hours a day, 6 hours of meetings.

  • Full-time, no days off: 10 × 6 − 6 = 54 hours
  • Half-time: 27 hours
  • Two days off: 8 × 6 − 4.8 = 43.2 hours

Add everyone up and you have the team's capacity.

Why 6 focus hours, not 8

Nobody does 8 hours of planned work a day. Email, questions, reviews and interruptions take a slice. Six is a common, honest starting point. If your team tracks time, use your real number.

Story points

If you know your average velocity, the calculator scales it by this sprint's capacity. If you usually finish 40 points and this sprint has 84% of normal capacity, plan for about 34.

Then plan to about 80% of that. The rest absorbs the bugs and surprises nobody put on the board.

How M-Tracker helps

Where M-Tracker fits

This calculator is a snapshot you fill in by hand. M-Tracker keeps it live: leave is recorded per person, planned hours sit next to available hours each week, and tracked time shows what the sprint actually took. Jira issues can be imported as tasks, and finished work can be reviewed inside Jira.
