Client work  ·  2 min read

Before any deliverable goes to a client, check five things: it meets the brief, it follows the brand rules, every fact and link is right, the format is correct, and someone with fresh eyes has read it. The person who made it does the first check. A second person checks client-facing work.

Three layers of review: self-check, tool check, manager review1. The person checksRe-reads the request. Runs ashort pre-send checklist.Catches: obvious misses, rushed sends2. A tool checksWork Check compares the workwith the request in seconds.Catches: missing parts, unanswered asks3. Your pile is smaller and your reviews are shorter.
Every gap the client finds costs a round and some trust.

Why internal checks get skipped

Deadlines. The work is "basically done," the client is waiting, and the account manager forwards it. Then the client finds the old logo, a typo in the headline, or a missing page. One more round, and a little less trust.

The five checks

1. The brief. Every must-have is there. It is for the right reader. It does what the client asked.

2. Brand rules. Colors, fonts, logo version, tone, legal lines. Check against the client's brand guide, not memory.

3. Facts and links. Prices, dates, names, phone numbers, URLs. Click every link.

4. Format. Sizes, file types, file names, page count. "Final_v3_REAL.pdf" is not a file name.

5. Fresh eyes. Someone who did not make it reads it once, as the client would.

Keep it fast

  • Use a checklist, not memory. The free pre-send checklist helps.
  • Check against the brief first. Stop if it fails. Do not polish work that needs a rethink.
  • Use a first review that compares the work with the brief, like the free Work Check tool.

Track what the client still catches

For a month, note every issue the client finds that the internal check missed. Add each type to the checklist.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Does this slow us down?

It adds 10 to 15 minutes and removes most extra rounds, which take days.

What if the client wants it now?

Send it with "draft, not yet checked" in the subject. Never let an unchecked draft pass as final.
