Accountability  ·  2 min read

Seven that work. Write a brief for every task. Ask for the commitment out loud. Agree done checks before the work starts. Get a one-line daily update. Review finished work against the brief the same day. Make accepted work visible to the team. And when something goes wrong, change the system so it cannot repeat. None of them needs a raised voice.

Accountability as a loop: agree what done means, do it, show it, review it, fix or acceptAccountability as a loopAgree what donemeansDo the workShow it: fileor linkReview againstthe briefFix, or acceptA loop everyone can see beats a word everyone defines differently.
Every strategy strengthens one step of the loop.

Seven strategies

1. The written brief. Result, audience, must-haves, due date. Five lines. The whole strategy rests on this.

2. The spoken yes. "Can you have it Thursday?" Wait for the answer. A commitment you can quote is one you can hold.

3. Done checks. Three to six yes-or-no questions the finished work must pass. Agreed before, checked after.

4. The daily line. Done, next, blocked. Fifteen words from each person. Slips become visible on day one, not at the deadline.

5. Same-day review. Compare the finished work with the brief within a day. Say what matched and what did not. Specific, private, calm.

6. Visible wins. Say what was finished and by whom, where the team can see it. Accountability needs credit as much as consequence.

7. Fix the system. Every mistake becomes a line in the next brief or a check in the list. The mistake happens once.

Which strategies to start with

One, three and five. Brief, checks, review. That is the loop. Add four when the team is remote. Add six when morale needs it. Seven becomes a habit once the first five are running.

How M-Tracker helps

Where M-Tracker fits

Strategies one, three and five are what M-Tracker does for every task. The brief holds the result, audience and must-haves. When the work is sent, M-Tracker checks it against the brief and writes a plain review the person sees first, the same minute. Accepted work is visible to the team, which handles six. The record of briefs and reviews makes seven easy, because the fix has somewhere to live.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Do these work for senior people?

Better, usually. Senior people hate vague expectations most of all.

What about consequences?

They are in strategy five. Work that meets the brief is accepted. Work that does not gets a specific note and another round.

How long before a team changes?

Two to four weeks of consistent briefs and reviews. The first week feels slow. The third feels obvious.
