Trust without surveillance  ·  2 min read

There are three kinds, and the best one depends on the job. Security logging systems protect devices and data and are standard. Time tracking systems record hours for billing and pay. Activity monitoring systems, with screenshots and app tracking, promise to show productivity and mostly show presence. A fourth kind, work review, looks at the finished work itself, and for most managers it answers the real question.

Two categories: employee monitoring software and work review softwareEMPLOYEE MONITORING SOFTWAREInstalls on the computer. Records time, activity levels, apps and sites, idleperiods, optional screenshots.Answers: was this person active?WORK REVIEW SOFTWAREWorks from the task. Holds the brief, readsthe finished work against it, says whatmatches and what is missing.Answers: was the work done, and was it right? Most teams need the second one and buy the first one, because it is more familiar.
Different categories, different questions.
1Trust without surveillance

The three monitoring systems

Security logging. Device management, antivirus, access logs. Good for every company. Watches devices, not people.

Time tracking. Hours by project and client. Good for agencies, consultancies and hourly roles. Watches time, not quality.

Activity monitoring. Screenshots, active time, app categories, keystroke counts. Promises productivity. Delivers a record of presence, and a trust problem.

2Trust without surveillance

Where each one fails

Security logging cannot tell you if work is good. Neither can time tracking. Activity monitoring claims to, but a person can be active all day and produce nothing usable. The question "is the work right" is not in any of the three.

3Trust without surveillance

The fourth system

Work review starts from what the task was supposed to produce, looks at what was produced, and says what matched and what did not. It watches the work. It is the only system of the four that measures output rather than input.

How M-Tracker helps

Where M-Tracker fits

M-Tracker is a work review system with a timer. Each task has a brief. When the work is sent, M-Tracker compares it with the brief and writes a plain review the person sees first. Hours are grouped by task, project and goal. Google Calendar meeting time appears on its own line. There are no screenshots, no keystroke logging and no activity monitoring. For a manager, it replaces the third system and sits beside the first two.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Which monitoring system do most companies have?

Security logging, almost universally. Activity monitoring is the minority, and it is the one people argue about.

Is time tracking a form of monitoring?

Lightly. Entered by the person, it is a record. Captured automatically with screenshots, it becomes surveillance.

Can a small business skip all of this?

Security basics, no. Activity monitoring, yes. Look at the work instead.
