Check that slide one says what you want the room to decide. Check that each slide makes one point, every number has a source, the last slide is the ask, and you can present it in the time you have with five minutes to spare. Then rehearse the first two minutes out loud.

The deck that runs out of time

Thirty slides. Twenty minutes. The presenter spends twelve minutes on background. At slide nineteen, someone says "we have to wrap up." The decision never gets made. The meeting is rescheduled. Two weeks lost.

The deck was not bad. It was unchecked.

2Before you send it

The seven-point check

1. Slide one says the decision

What do you want the room to do at the end? Approve a budget? Pick an option? Agree a date? Say it on the first slide. "We recommend extending the pilot by one quarter. Here is why." The rest of the deck supports that.

2. The story is three parts

Where we are. What we learned. What we should do. If your deck has more parts than that, the extra ones are probably background. Cut or move to the appendix.

3. One point per slide

Read each slide's title. Does it make a claim? "Setup completion rose from 41% to 55%" is a claim. "Results" is not. If a slide has three charts, it has three points. Split it.

4. Every number has a source and a date

Someone in the room will ask "where is that from?" Put the answer under the chart in small text. It saves the question and builds trust.

5. The last slide is the ask, not "Thank you"

The last slide stays on screen during questions. Make it the decision you want, with the options. "Thank you" wastes the most valuable slide in the deck.

6. It fits the time with five minutes spare

A rough rule: two minutes per content slide. Twenty minutes means eight to ten slides, not thirty. Everything else goes in the appendix, where it is available if asked.

7. Names, titles, and logos are right

Especially if you reused a template. Search for the last audience's name.

3Before you send it

The five minutes that matter

Rehearse the first two minutes out loud. If you can say what the decision is and why in two minutes, the deck works. If you find yourself saying "so, first, a bit of background," start over.

Example

A product team's quarterly review deck had 34 slides for a 25-minute slot. Slide one was the agenda. The recommendation was on slide 28.

The check moved the recommendation to slide one, cut the deck to eleven slides with an appendix of 23, added sources to four charts, and replaced the "Thank you" slide with the three options and a recommendation. The meeting ended eight minutes early with a decision.

Where M-Tracker fits

A deck is a task with a brief: the audience, the decision, the time slot. When it is marked done in M-Tracker, it is checked against that brief, so "does it lead with the decision?" is asked before the presenter walks in. For teams that present to clients or leadership often, this means decks that land, and fewer rescheduled meetings.
