Staffing and recruiting  ·  4 min read

Lead with one placement story, told in numbers. "Five forklift operators, night shift, all five still there after a month." Then ask for two minutes to send a sample summary. Get your next clients from the managers of people you have already placed, from the clients whose last order went right, and from candidates who are too good to leave on the bench. A recruiter with a business development target does not need a pitch. They need three true stories and the habit of asking.

Your placements are your pipeline. Tell their story in numbers.
1Staffing and recruiting

Start with the story

Pick your best recent placement. Write it as one sentence with three numbers. How many, how fast, how many stuck.

"Last month I filled three medical assistant roles for a clinic in two weeks, and all three passed their 30-day review."

That sentence is your opener for every call, email and introduction. It is short, it is checkable, and it is not "we're different."

2Staffing and recruiting

Four places to find the next client

1. The managers of people you placed. A worker you placed six months ago now reports to a new manager, or moved to a new company. Call the worker: "How's it going? Who runs hiring where you are now?" Warm introductions, every time.

2. Clients whose last order went right. The best time to ask for more is right after a good fill. "Is there another site or another manager here with the same problem?" One sentence, then silence.

3. Candidates too good to leave on the bench. A strong candidate you cannot place today is a reason to call five companies that should want them. "I have a night-shift lead with two years in cold storage and a current card. Is that someone you'd want to meet?" Even a no starts a relationship.

4. Companies that are visibly hiring in your niche. Job boards tell you who is struggling. Call them with the story, not the pitch.

3Staffing and recruiting

The ask, word for word

After a good order: "Glad that worked. Is there another manager here who has the same problem you had?"

To a placed worker: "Who handles hiring where you are now? Would you be OK introducing me?"

To a cold prospect: "I filled three roles like yours last month and all three stuck. Can I send you one of the summaries, names removed, so you can see how we work?"

Each one is short, specific and easy to say yes to.

4Staffing and recruiting

Why your fill quality is your sales plan

Every ask above depends on the last order having gone right. A client whose submittals bounced does not give you a name. A worker who was confirmed badly does not introduce you. The fastest way to more clients is fewer orders that come back, which means the written order, the checked submittal and the confirmed start.

How M-Tracker helps

Where M-Tracker fits

The placement story needs placements that stuck. M-Tracker reads each submittal and confirmation against the client's order before the client sees it, so more of your fills become stories you can tell. A client report, sent as a link the client opens without an account, is a story already written in numbers, ready to forward.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How many calls a week should I make?

Fewer than you think, with proof in each. Ten calls with a placement story beat fifty with a pitch.

What if my firm does not give me placements to talk about yet?

Use the firm's. "We filled..." is fine until "I filled..." is true.

Should I use LinkedIn for business development?

Yes, for the warm introductions from placed candidates. Not for mass messages. See the post on InMail response rates.
