Before you send it  ·  2 min read

Check that a stranger can tell in five seconds what the page offers and what to do. Then check that every claim has proof, the call to action is clear and repeated, the page matches the ads and emails pointing to it, it reads easily, it works on a phone, and every link and form works.

1Before you send it

1. The five-second test

Show the top of the page to someone who has not seen it. Hide it after five seconds. Ask: What is this? Who is it for? What should you do? If they cannot answer all three, rewrite the headline and the line under it.

2Before you send it

2. One message

A landing page has one job. If it tries to sell three things, cut two. Everything on the page should support the one action.

3Before you send it

3. Proof for every claim

"Saves hours every week." How many? For whom? Add a number, a quote, or a short example. Remove claims you cannot support.

4. The call to action

  • Is the button text specific? "Start my free trial" beats "Submit."
  • Is it visible without scrolling on a phone?
  • Is it repeated after the main sections?

5. It matches what sent people there

Read the ad or email that links to the page. Same offer? Same words? Same price? People who feel tricked leave.

7. Mobile

Read the whole page on a phone. Long paragraphs, tiny text and buttons too close together all hurt.
